The Old Mutual Young Future Leaders (YFL) Bursary programme offers qualifying students an opportunity to study further and achieve a specific qualification that will enable better work opportunities and future. We touched base with the company’s bursary programme lead Mambuyisa “Nono” Rapiya to find out more.

Nono, what is the Young Future Leaders programme, and what do you hope to achieve through it?

At Old Mutual we offer funding to students who are passionate about becoming Accountants or Actuaries. The bursary is offered to students that have done exceptionally well at school. Every year, the Old Mutual bursary gives an opportunity to bright minds to study at a prestigious university in South Africa. The bursary is set to cover most of the costs.

So let’s dive right in to Actuarial and Accounting bursary programme; what does the bursary cover, what are the requirements and when is the closing date?

Applications for the Old Mutual Actuarial and Accounting bursaries are now open and applications close on 31 August 2021. Applications can be made by logging on to oldmutual.co.za/careers/young-future-leaders or our listeners can just google ‘Old Mutual young future leaders’. Current grade 12 learners must apply using their final grade 11 results, whilst post matriculants can use their final matric results to complete the application.

How can a prospective bursary holder qualify for the Accounting Bursary?

  • If you are a South African citizen then you can apply for the bursary.
  • You need to have  at least 70% or Level 6 for all subjects including Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and English
  • You also need to commit to our CA Training Programme, after which you will work for Old Mutual

And for the Actuarial Science Bursary? What are the basic things you are looking for?

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Have received an A in Maths (not Maths literacy) and Bs for all your other subjects in matric.

Can students study at any university in South Africa?

Students from the following universities will be considered:

Accounting Bursary:

  • North-West University;
  • Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University;
  • University of Cape Town;
  • Rhodes University;
  • University of Fort Hare;
  • University of Free State;
  • University of Johannesburg;
  • University of KwaZulu-Natal;
  • University of South Africa (UNISA);
  • University of Stellenbosch;
  • University of Pretoria;
  • University of the Witwatersrand; and
  • University of the Western Cape.

Actuarial Science Bursary:

  • North-West University;

What does the programme cover?

The Old Mutual Accounting Actuarial Science Bursaries cover:

  • The costs of tuition
  • Residence fees and one annual return flight home for students who are not studying in their hometown.
  • Book allowance
  • Academic and emotional support,
  • Good networking opportunities and vacation work from second year

Now let’s look at the key characteristics or traits you look for in a prospective student?

I’m looking for that student that possess excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.  Successful students must have good interpersonal skills and a logical, creative mind, along with good judgement and decision-making skills.

Someone who is a team player, has a passion for maths and statistics an appetite for challenge, plus drive and initiative and that special x-factor that proves you are a cut above the rest.

What kind of support does Old Mutual provide these students, apart from the financial assistance?

We host various webinars with the bursary holders where they can interact with senior leaders in our business. During these sessions they share experiences, and the students have an opportunity to ask those question about our business that they may have been wondering about.

We also support our bursary holders through various interventions like study and exam support through additional tuition as and where required and being there for them emotionally. Our bursary holders have access to the Old Mutual Employee Wellbeing programme because we recognise that they may battle with various emotional challenges while studying, especially when everything is so unstable at the moment due to the pandemic.

After getting a bursary and joining the YFL programme, what are the opportunities for youth within the organisation both locally and abroad, and what are the career opportunities on offer for them?
